The figures released indicate that mortgage lending for November 2009 decreased by 10%, indicating an annual seasonal slowdown. A total of £12billion was advanced through November, down from £13.3billion for the previous month of October. The figure is also a drop of 14% from the same period in 2008.
The figures were released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders who commented that although a decline was normal around this time each year, 2009’s figures were “a little larger than normal.” They did also say, though, that conditions were holding steady and that there shouldn’t be much change in the coming months.
“Although we always see figures like this during this time of year, we hold a lot of optimism that they will improve quickly. It always could have been much worse,” says Laurence Smith of Decision Homebuyers. “However, with mortgage lending still low, first time buyers and people looking to enter the market will still have a tough time when buying their first property. There is happier news abound though with the Bank of England announcing that the value of mortgages approved for house purchases has reached its highest level this year during November, so there is cause for optimism.”
