Cheshire, United Kingdom (12th June, 2012) – dayinsure, a leading online provider of temporary insurance for cars, vans and motorhomes in the UK, comments on the likelihood that drug-driving in England, Scotland and Wales could become a jail-term offence under a new law expected to be announced in the Queen’s Speech.
Under the new plans, if police can show that driving has been impaired through the abuse of drugs, drivers can be prosecuted and could face a fine of up to £5,000, a driving ban of at least 12 months, and up to six months in jail.
Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said that in some countries – including Germany, Spain and Australia – this law was already in effect. He commented: “What we are saying is that drug-driving is blighting this country and people are being killed and seriously injured on a regular basis. We don’t know exactly how many because we’re not testing correctly, but by giving police the technology to do so, they will have the power to remove this blight.”
The Home Office is reported to be currently considering several different roadside saliva-testing devices, and are expected to offer their approval by the end of 2012. Roadside tests would give police the power to arrest people for drug-driving.
Mr Penning continued: “We’re going to have a new piece of equipment in the station which will perform the same function as the drink-driving tests, and will therefore give the prosecution the evidential test to take suspected drivers to court.”
A spokesperson for dayinsure commented: “We are pleased to see that drug-driving offenders could soon become as liable to face jail time as drink-drivers in this country. This is a long-overdue law and if passed, would only contribute to making the UK’s roads safer in the long-term.”
