England 12/08/2013 – As the tastes of travellers, change all kinds of places are finding themselves transformed into tourist destinations.
Ellesmere Port, which is a large industrial town in Cheshire, is a great example of this new trend. Given the fact that the town is still home to a range of industries meant that many locals were sceptical about the idea of developing it as a tourist destination. It is still home to some big companies like Vauxhall who still make cars there. The town is also home to the ICI chemical works and there is a huge oil refinery at Stanlow, so many doubted that tourists who were looking for hotels in Chester would settle on Ellesmere Port as a destination. However, that is exactly what is happening, with tourist numbers to the town steadily increasing.
Interestingly it is the town’s industrial heritage, which is attracting most of the visitors. The port area fascinates and enchants visitors, and virtually everyone who comes to the town visits the National Waterways Museum. There they can see how the industrial canal system used to work, and really step back into a time when the canals were the main way products were moved around the UK.
The Blue Planet Aquarium also brings many visitors to the area. It opened in 1998 and at the time, was the biggest aquarium in the UK. In 2010, the shark dive won the Visit Chester and Cheshire Award for Best Tourism Experience of the Year.
Shoppers flock to Ellesmere Port
Another surprising visitor magnet is shopping. Many foreign visitors are stunned, but charmed to find that the UK’s largest outlet centre is located in a town rather than a city. When it was built, the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet was the biggest in Europe. Every year it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the town who come to shop in its 145 stores. Local hotels like the Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port play host to many of these shoppers who come from all parts of the UK. Given that two thirds of Chinese tourists are primarily shopping for fashion, a lot of them spend at least one night in Ellesmere Port, so the hotel has many international guests too.
