UK Companies Want More Contractors

England 18/07/2013 – Across several UK industries, there are skills shortages, and this is changing the way many UK firms employ people..

Every year, the CBI and Pearsons carry out their Education and Skills Survey to try to identify whether UK businesses have access to the skilled workers they need. In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that some sectors of the UK economy are suffering from skills shortages. Over one third of firms have reported that they are finding it difficult to recruit personnel with the right skills. This is particularly the case when it comes to IT personnel, which most sectors need.

Add to that the fact that most firms cannot really afford to employ professionals on long-term contracts and you have the perfect storm. This is leading more and more companies to turn to contractors and freelancers. Taking this approach to staffing enables, them to employ the people they need from across the world, growing the pool of candidates they can potentially choose from. In addition, taking people on as contractors provides firms with the flexibility they need without tying them into the long-term contracts that few firms can afford.

This approach is contributing to the fact that more people from the UK are deciding to work for themselves. It also means that the workers from other parts of Europe are finding it easier to secure work for UK firms.

Demand for companies who provide umbrella services is also growing

Much of this growth would not have been viable without the use of umbrella companies. The firms that provide these services have seen demand increase steadily over the past ten years.

They understand the legislation surrounding employment in the UK, and help both companies wanting to employ contractors and those looking for contractor work. Experienced PAYE companies, like iPaye, know how to ensure that contractors and freelancers adhere to UK law. They help to ensure that the contracts drawn up are legally binding and that the contractor’s employment rights are protected, as well. In addition, they help freelancers to keep their tax bill as low as possible, whilst ensuring that all taxes owed are actually paid. Most UK firms believe that the skills gaps they are experiencing now will get worse before it gets better, so it is likely that demand for the services of PAYE or umbrella companies will continue to grow.
