England 15/12/2012 – Coast to coast walks are a wonderful way for people to enjoy walking and a holiday combined
In the UK, there are a few coast to coast walks, which are slowly being discovered by holidaymakers. Anyone who enjoys hiking or just simply taking a slow amble can potentially enjoy taking a walking holiday. More and more people are realising this and discovering the joys of this alternative kind of holiday.
The UK has some beautiful countryside and walking through it is by far the best way to see and appreciate it. A coast-to-coast walk has the added advantage of giving you the chance to visit two lovely beaches.
People are looking for a way to enjoy a family holiday on a budget and a walking holiday is the perfect way to do this. It means families do not have to find the money for flights. All they need it the money to get there and to pay for accommodation.
Walking holidays are also growing in popularity because they are good for the health. People in the UK are increasingly aware of the need to keep active and stay healthy, so these kinds of holidays are appealing to people on that level too.
Coast to coast walks across the Yorkshire Dales
One of the most popular coast-to-coast walks is one of the oldest. In fact, it is actually called The Coast to Coast Walk. It takes walkers from Robin Hoods Bay to St Bee along a 192-mile route. It was devised by the famous walker Alfred Wainwright. He first published the route, in 1973. Over the years, the walk has had to evolve slightly. Erosion and heavy traffic on some parts of the route have caused some adjustments to be made. This has made the route slightly longer, but only by a few miles.
The walk passes through three National Parks, each with its own unique landscape. The three parks it passes through are the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
A whole industry has grown up along the walk providing walkers with everything they need. Firms like Mickledore have been advising walkers on where to stay and how to break up the walk for several years. Each year they are busier than the year before.
