Interest in Hull Driver Training on the Increase

England 16/08/2012- The recession and demographics combine to produce increased interest in Hull driver training

You would not expect the search term Hull driver training to be a particularly popular one and in reality, it is not. However, it is a search term that is being used on an increasingly more frequent basis. Exactly why is not completely clear, but the driver training industry has a few theories as to why this is the case.

Hull has suffered from high unemployment for several decades now. This has been the case since the decline of the fishing industry and the areas traditional heavy industries in the 1970s. Today, the city has 7.9% of their working age population unemployed, the worst percentage in the UK.

A situation many organisations in the city are working hard to change. They are doing so in several ways including providing education and the means to take advantage of training that can result in long-term jobs.

After suffering a decade of falling activity, the port of Hull is once again busy. They port diversified after the decline of the fishing industry and is now a busy Roll-on Roll-off ferry port that handles thousands of trucks and containers every hour. This activity is now providing new freight related jobs for the city’s population.

Young people in the city are realising that taking a LGV or HGV test could provide them with a secure future. Older workers, who are currently working part time, are realising the same and are saving up and taking their LGV and/or HGV test in an effort to boost their income and provide them with another skill that can get them work throughout Europe.

The role of demographics in renewed interest in Hull driver training

Total Training Solutions GB has been marketing themselves differently to convince more people to complete their LGV and HGV courses. They have been pointing out to potential trainees that whilst there is currently a lot of competition for heavy goods vehicle driving jobs this is set to change soon. The average age of UK HGV drivers is 56 meaning that in the next few years thousands will be retiring. Those younger people who already have their HGV licence and some experience will be in a position to step into these retired driver’s shoes and get good long-term jobs that pay well.
