27 October 2011- NEW research has revealed it’s not just the leaves which fall in autumn; there is a danger women will lose more hair too.
As the winter weather sets in, females up and down the country will be starting their winter beauty regimes, but scientists in Sweden have uncovered it’s not just our skin which needs special care during the frosty weather, our locks need attention too.
As a result of research among 800 women, scientists discovered autumn makes women lose more hair than in other seasons.
Female hair loss expert Lucas Sojka, managing director of Hair Solved, explains:
“Our hair goes through different stages of growth. These cycles alternate between a growth phase called anagen, lasting about three years and a resting phase telogen, which lasts about three months.
“During telogen, the hair remains in the follicle until it is pushed out by the growth of a new hair in the anagen phase. About 15 per cent of hairs are in telogen at any one time.
“The research found women have the most ‘resting’ hairs in July, which means they start to fall out around 100 days later in October, resulting in autumnal hair loss.”
The Swedish scientists concluded the body holds onto hair during the summer as a way of protecting the scalp from hot sun and damaging rays and then sheds this during the autumn season.
Lucas added: “Females lose on average 100 strands of hair a day, this is especially noticeable when brushing hair or when in the shower. If, during the autumn and winter months, you observe you’re losing more than this on a regular basis, it would be advisable to make an appointment with your GP or seek the advice of a hair loss specialist.”
Hair loss in women is a bigger problem than a lot of people realise, one in three women over the age of 25 years in the UK has suffered some sort of hair loss and a massive 4.8 million women have a serious hair thinning problem.
