There’s a big change coming to car insurance quotes for women drivers in 2012.
The European Court of Justice has ruled that price for men’s and women’s car insurance should be equal despite statistics showing that women tend to be safer drivers.
The ruling means that from December 21st 2012, women will not get cheaper car insurance quotes based solely on the fact they’re a different sex.
It’s thought that the ruling will also mean an increase in car insurance premiums for women drivers rather than a reduction in what male drivers are quoted.
So, why have women historically enjoyed cheaper car insurance than men?
There are a number of reasons why in general women’s car insurance has been lower than men’s for many years. There are exceptions to this rule, such as certain age groups but in the main women can get a better deal.
- Statistics
For many ages groups the car insurance statistics show that women are involved in fewer accidents than men. And when they are involved in an accident it’s usually of a less serious nature.
This approach may not seem fair as undoubtedly there are women drivers out there who are more of a risk than male drivers of the same age. It’s impossible for car insurance companies to assess every driver though so previous accident history and statistics form the basis of a car insurance quote.
- Attitude
Again, people’s approach to driving can be different regardless of what sex they are. It is widely regarded that women have a safer and more responsible attitude to driving than men.
Young men in particular can come under a lot of peer pressure and the ‘boy racer’ syndrome can make them a much higher risk in the eyes of the car insurance companies.
- Vehicle choice
To lots of people a car can be a status symbol and a high performance car may give them more confidence or portray a certain image for their job.
Man are generally more likely than women to buy a more powerful car so again this is reflected in the cheap car insurances quotes that the majority of women receive, although of course there are exceptions such as young women who’ve just passed their test.
When you combine a safer and cheaper to repair vehicle with the other factors mentioned above, it’s clear to see why women are usually quoted cheaper car insurance than men.
