England 31/10/2012- The resin flooring industry has found going green has opened up new opportunities
Resin flooring is now one of the most popular flooring solutions. It is used throughout the world and in a huge variety of places. Many modern shops, airports, transport hubs, schools and factories have these kinds of floors. It is also popular for residential driveways and is increasingly being laid inside private homes.
When you realise how hardwearing it is and easy to maintain you can see why this is the case. However, some people have been worried about the impact such flooring has on the environment. In reality, resin floors are just as environmentally friendly as other flooring solutions. The aggregates are the same as those used in traditional flooring, as is the laying process.
However, there is an additional component and that is the resin, which goes on top of the aggregate once it is laid. The raw materials for this extra component need to be extracted and processed, which of course has an environmental impact. However, the fact that a resin floor lasts for decades longer than a floor without a protective resin surface means these floors are no more environmentally unfriendly than traditional floors.
However, the industry has not sat back. Instead, they have strived to make their flooring more environmentally friendly. One of the biggest steps forward has been in coming up with epoxies that do not contain solvents. These epoxies are greener to produce and give off fewer fumes when laid and in use. This is something many potential customers are interested in.
The industry is constantly developing new floors systems using re-cycled aggregates and other waste materials, which is because the resin provides the floor with its durability. This means that they now offer a bigger range of finishes, something that is encouraging more customers to order their floors.
Resin flooring companies join landfill reduction schemes
Firms like Quest Ltd, who have been laying resin flooring for decades are working hard to be more environmentally friendly. They are a progressive company who is always using new techniques to improve their service. For years, they have been gradually reducing their waste. Joining the WRAP Halving Waste to Landfill scheme has helped to accelerate this process.
