As a Green initiative Toshiba Barcode Printers and the Barcode Depot have gone Caron Zero

From 1st September 2011 All printers that The Barcode depot and Toshiba sell will be Carbon Zero.

DID YOU KNOW over 3 billion (yes half the world’s population) currently use “three stone” wooden fires for cooking and heating ? These fires are very inefficient and polluting with the World health organisation estimating that there will be 1.9 million premature deaths each year from exposure to smoke and these are mainly women and children.

Other negative effects of this situation are the deforestation of the land as any wood found is burnt which causes potential farmland to become arid scrubland which is then subject to erosion. Women and children are spending 50% of their day looking for wood to burn when that time could be spent working or looking for work to improve their economic position.

So what does that have to do with Barcode Printers

All barcode printers that Toshiba and the Barcode depot sell from the 1st of Sept are CARBON OFSET by the Carbon Zero trust. The trust produces and monitors Energy Efficient Stoves which are distributed to the most needy areas having the following benefits. They match the cooking style of the households so they are getting 100% takeup, There is an Immediate reduction in Carbon by an average 3 Tonnes per year. The fuel burden (amount of wood needed) is reduced by at least 50%, There is a dramatic reduction in smoke emissions (70-80%) for each family, It reduces cooking time, Saves wood and water, Prevents deforestation and erosion

How good is all that ?

These energy efficient stoves are provided FOC to householders and are monitored and GPS Tagged  so there whereabouts is known and they are revisited on a regular basis after installation to ensure they are functioning properly and are in full use. This saves the villagers time from collecting wood and cooking so they can start to create economic and social enterprise allowing them the opportunity to improve their chances for the future and take a step along the path to reduced carbon emissions

We reckon that’s a small but all round win win situation
