Some car brands are known for their safety, others, for their performance. Some are known as good reliable family cars, and others are known for their rip-tiding engines and sporting sensibilities. Then there’s Mazda: known for all of the above, and rightly so. No other car brand can match the versatility of a Mazda, and that was proven once again as a Mazda car took home first place in the Road Atlanta race.
The fascinating Mazda6 Skyactiv-D is an incredible vehicle, and it certainly proved its worth as it faced off against other amazing cars and brands at the Rolex Grand-Am GX race at Road Atlanta this April. One of the things that makes this car so special is that is a diesel-powered vehicle. The win was the first for the production-car Skyactiv-D racer, as well as being the first time in history that a Grand-Am race has seen a diesl-powered vehicle on the winner’s podium. Overall, it was a great event for the Mazda team both on the ground and on the racetrack, with the Mazda6 also placing in third as well as first that say.
Words from John M. Doonan, the Director of Mazda Motorsports, proved that the Mazda attitude has always been one that tries to integrate sporting technologies with everyday practicalities. He said, “We’ve always said that the best street cars make the best racecars, and, with more than half of the components in the race engine being shared with the street engine, this program is a solid proof-point.” Truly, this was shown to be the case on the street that day.
The Mazda 6 Skyactiv is one of the best sports racing vehicles that the brand has ever put on the road, and that’s really saying something considering the brand’s legacy in the world of car racing. Beating competitors such as Porsche and other luxury brands is just one of the awesome things Mazdas can do. This is just sure to be the first win in a long line of victories for the 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine Mazda6.
